Why some dogs have high adoption fees while others do not have an adoption fee?

There are always people willing to adopt a pure breed dog or cat. Since prices for a pet in the store are so high, there is willingness to adopt with a high fee when the dog is from a certain breed. Sometimes the high fee reflects medical expenses and transport cost from breeders and puppy mills (sometimes on our of state trips). Overall, Noah's Ark has the privilege to support these beautiful animals that lack any chance to survive on their own in the streets.

What are "special needs" dogs?

These dogs were dropped at our shelter by the community. Usually they were bought as gifts from breeders and stores. Most of these dogs developed or were found with "special needs": cataracts, kennel cough, heart murmurs, infections, etc. We have taken them in and provided the best medical care we can afford while we are looking for good homes for adoption. In this way they have a second chance in life without returning to the breeder. They are as homeless as any mix dog in a pound. It is very rewarding to care for one of these needed puppies, but think twice about adopting one of them. It implies a commitment for which not everybody is suitable. They go as they are, with a disclosure in their particular problem. Their fees goes to cover medical expenses and to support the mission of this shelter. We are an all-volunteer, non-kill public charity shelter. Feel free to contact the adoption counselor, Alex (718) 343-5204 from 12pm to 4 pm. Please insist.

Where does funding come from for The Noah's Ark Project?

Adoption fees are the only direct funding source of this all-volunteer, public charity shelter. Our only other source of financing comes via charitable donations from our Rowing Crew members and other non-member donations.

Why should I pay an adoption fee?

Adoption fees support the shelter. There are different fees ranging from FREE TO GOOD HOME to $600.

  • The high fees on some dogs, pure breed, all the shots, spayed/neutered, some with papers support the shelter and the nearly 200 permanent residents in it. We are non-kill shelter and nearly all of our residents never met a home of their own.
  • Our pure breed puppies, dogs, and cats are also homeless: unwanted gifts, broken homes by divorce or death, returns to pet shops to be dropped at kill pounds, abandoned tied up at the door of the shelter, etc. We do not promote or contribute to increase the number of pets born in puppy mills or requested by pet shops.
  • No salaries are paid at the Ark, it is an all volunteer, non profit organization that only survives on public charity and adoption fees.

What are the requirements for adoption?
  • A veterinarian's reference is a must.
  • If it is your first pet you can sign up with the doctor at the Noah's Ark for a year ONLY IF YOU LIVE AROUND THE SHELTER.
  • No adoptions can be done to outside of state adopters if there is not GOOD AND TRUSTABLE VETERINARIAN REFERENCE.
