With our animal shelters running at their capacity levels and many cats and dogs having to be euthanized every year, we are going to have to evaluate our pet overpopulation solutions. Currently, we are putting around 4 million animals to sleep each year for want of a good home. Some of these are unsuitable for homing due to psychological or aggression problems, but a great many of them would make a wonderful companion for a family or perhaps a lone elderly person. Pet overpopulation solutions do not end just with putting an animal into a shelter. We must consider what is going to happen to that animal once he is there. Each unwanted pet costs a lot of money to look after whilst in the shelter and...

It is very common to have pets at home these days and people usually treat their pets like their own children. Thus, you also need to have a way to keep an eye on your pet so that it does not run away when you are not looking. In such cases, it becomes very difficult to locate your pet if it runs away, even if you put up a number of signs and boards everywhere. The loss of a pet can be very traumatic too. Thus, would it not be great if you had a way of keeping an eye on your pet and know where it is at any point of the day? A pet gps is the answer to all your pet tracking problems. This is the best way of keeping control of your pets. Supposing you have a big backyard and you have a problem letting...

Heartworm is a serious disease common in dogs and cats. It has become a major concern of pet lovers and veterinarians alike over the recent years. Heartworm disease is transmitted by mosquitoes among animals. The transmission happens when a mosquito bites an animal infected with heartworm. The heartworm larvae (also called microfilariae) enter the mosquito's body. When the infected mosquito feeds upon its next host, the microfilariae are transmitted and deposited onto the pet's skin and lives in the tissue of the animal host for a while. The microfilariae will stay in the animal tissue until they have increased in size. The mature larvae will then enter into the bloodstream and will travel until...

If the possessor desires unrefined intimacy, a dog or cat are the normal animals that come to brain. Welsh Terriers

Initially, Welsh terriers were bred for hunting rabbits, foxes and badgers, but public opinion and the decline in the lust for blood in general have gone against blood sports and so this native breed of Wales has become a show dog and a pet. Breeders attempt to outdo each other by breeding the Welsh terrier to have a denser wiry coat and deeper colouration. The Welsh terrier is also a popular pet because it is one of the most easy-going terriers. This Welsh breed is a fun loving dog. It just loves to run, chase and play, which makes it a tremendous companion and a perfect pet. Welsh terriers need lots of exercise, so be prepared for lots of walks, if you decide to get one. Having a pet is just like having a baby. Pet owners take much time and effort in giving names to their pets much like they would do with their own children. Getting the right name for an ordinary or an exotic pet would give more distinction and personality to the pet. It is hard enough to choose an ordinary pet and choosing an exotic pet makes the choice doubly difficult. It is always important to think twice before choosing an exotic pet because they are more difficult to take care of than ordinary pets. The first thing to consider when choosing an exotic pet is your degree of commitment to the pet. Owning and taking care of an exotic pet is no joke and one should always be prepared for challenges...

Pets can play an important role in our lives as we age. As we grow older, knowing that you're loved, or that someone cares about you, isn't necessarily enough, and that need to feel needed-and appreciated for what you do-increases. Pets fulfill this need because they depend on their owners for care and attention. In return, the pets offer love and unqualified approval. Studies have been documented that petting a dog or cat lowers blood pressure in hypertensive patients and that older people show improved alertness when caring for a pet. Pets often seem to be especially valuable for some people experiencing major life chances, such as illness or the loss of a loved one. Depressions can often be...

Firstly, it is important to find a pet store that is close enough to you to meet any future needs you may have. This is not such an important issue if you will not have to be making return visits to the store, but if you are purchasing a pet that requires special food or supplies that are only found at that pet store, you will want to make sure it is not going to be a burden trying to get to it. Next, you want to make sure that the...

My wife helps out at our local animal shelter, and every time I go down there I'm simply amazed at the wide variety of gorgeous pets that are in need of a good home. Many folks pay big bucks to a pet store for a dog, but what they don't realize is that in many cases those same animals came either from a puppy mill or... yep, you guessed it - an animal shelter! While it's true that many shelter animals have worms and/or are in need of medical attention, the fact is that many "pet store" animals have the very same problems. The primary difference is the pet store charges hundreds of dollars for an animal that is just like those that can be had for as little as $25 at the local shelter. It's a sad fact...

It is a great question because there is a big difference in the quality of dog shampoos available on the market. It’s smart, uses a litter box, can learn to come and walk on a leash, is at home anywhere from a big house with yard to a college dorm room, and it probably won’t make you sneeze. What’s this terrific alternative to a dog, cat and hamster? A rabbit. Rabbits are funny and charming — and they need you as much as you need them. Like dogs and cats, rabbits are abandoned every day. > We love our pets and want them to have the best life possible. What are some things we can do to care for our pets? We all agree that our pets, especially dogs and cats, are members of our family. We talk to them, play with them, sleep with them and include them in almost everything we do. As members of our family, or our "four-legged children", we do everything we can to make sure they are happy and healthy. As pet owners, we have different ways of showing our love for our pets. Some people take their pets with them everywhere they go. I have seen dogs on vacation with their families, including camping and at the Jersey Shore. Motels, hotels, and other vacation destinations have become...

Losing a family pet can be a traumatic experience, especially on children who are close to the lost pet. But, one in three pet owners fail to take the steps needed to ensure that this tragedy does not occur in their home. These steps can be as simple as providing a pet identification tag with up-to-date contact information in the event the family pet ever gets lost, so that the finder of the pet will have a resource to contact the pet owner. Because a majority of pet owners fail to take this step, their family pet usually ends up in a shelter, or just released to wander around. One of the biggest concerns for pet owners on the upwardly mobile move is the cost associated with constantly purchasing a...

Raising rabbits as pets can be quite a bit of work, the same as with any pet. They are good natured, gentle pets, but somewhat aloof. They do get scared very easily, as is part of their nature. The more time you spend with them the more responsive they are to you, and will respond to their name. They do need some gentle handling in the beginning but become part of the family within weeks. Rabbits can live up to 10 years. When you first bring your rabbit home try to keep things as quiet as possible. They are skittish and do not like change, so will need to be gently introduced to their environment so they can become accustomed to it and you. Each new noise will be a source of fear. However, during my road trips, I'll be talking to shelter and rescue workers and learning about the pet overpopulation crisis along the way. I will pass what I learn on to everyone here. While the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) estimates the number of cats and dogs who are euthanized in shelters each year to be approximately three to four million, the American Humane Association estimates this number to...

Spike is a pre-owned cat. When we got him from the humane society in their adopt-a-pet program, his name was Lonnie. I couldn't in good conscience continue to use that name for a cat, so I renamed him Spike. I know that seems more appropriate for a dog, but I think Spike has always appreciated the new handle. As cats go, Spike is a good example of the species. He sleeps most of the day on a warm spot on top of the couch or on the table on the front porch if the sun is out. He chases squirrels in the front yard when the mood strikes him and lays in wait in the back for any chipmunk that might be dumb enough to cross his path. He guards the house when I'm gone and he keeps the garage free from...

They had gone full speed ahead into the creative process, all gung ho about creating their abundant lives only to discover they've been put on something of a "waiting list." We've grown up in a society of instant gratification and when there is not an instantaneous manifestation of our spiritual desires we can sometimes feel like we've been left behind, that our journey has been for naught or that somehow we're doing something "wrong". Yet there is so much beauty in the offing! And appreciation of that can help soften the waiting period and keep you in...

My eight month old puppy's name is Josie. We got her at four months old from the animal shelter. She was originally sold in a pet store to a couple that had to move and they said they could not take her with them. I am wondering about that story. You'll find out why later. When my husband, my son and I brought Josie home, she chewed a lot because she was teething. For people that have never had puppies before, they loose their baby teeth the same as babies. We bought her a lot of toys and took her to a veterinarian for a physical. According to the animal hospital, we had to have her spayed within sixty days of adopting her or we would have to give her back. My son and I took Josie for the surgery...
